Here are five of the best places to see the Super Bloom in Central California.

PACIFIC GROVE

If color is what you’re looking for, stroll through the winding paths of Pacific Grove , a scenic half hour drive from the Lodge. Make sure your phone is fully charged, as you’ll want to capture this sight. To the west, huge expanses of the Pacific offer multiple shades of blue, while eastward a purple and pink carpet of blooming ice plants convert the area into a dazzling covering of flowers. A walk along the path from Lover’s Point to Cannery Row will offer spectacular views. If you really want to see the plants up close stop by Perkins Park , which is part of the Shoreline Park. (It’s named for Hayes Perkins who is credited with planting the first pink ice plant along the waterfront.)
Insider Tip: A walk to the tip of Shoreline Park will bring you to the John Denver Memorial, a plaque mounted on a rock that commemorates where the iconic singer’s plane crashed in 2007.

PINNACLES NATIONAL PARK

GARLAND RANCH

A true gem of a nature area just five minutes from the Lodge is Garland Ranch . There are multiple trails to enjoy in this park, which is packed with history and elevation gains ranging upward of 2,000 feet. The Garland Ranch Waterfall and Siesta Point via Lupine Loop says it all – and is one of the park’s most popular trails. The trail is always beautiful, but the addition of seasonal purple wildflowers along the route certainly adds to its beauty. There are a few hills, but the views on a clear day make the effort worthwhile.
Insider Tip: The waterfall flows best after a rain, so take advantage if you have the opportunity to see it really flowing. Otherwise prepare for more of a waterfall drip (but it’s still worth the trip.)

The most highly rated beach to take your dog to is Carmel Beach . Here you can let your dog off-leash (as long as the dog responds to voice commands). He can romp in the surf and run free! Take a walk along the Scenic Path, which spans from Carmel Beach to Carmel River Beach. You will have access to magnificent views including Pebble Beach Golf Links.

The other beaches require dogs to remain on a leash. These include Carmel River State Beach, Garrapata State Park, Monterey State Beach, Del Monte Beach, Pfeiffer Beach, and Asilomar State Beach.

History of Movie-Making in Monterey County CA

Monterey County is known far and wide for the incredible coastline, majestic cliff faces, sweeping valleys, and historic architecture. The rich scenery of this area has fascinated visitors and locals alike, and it’s no surprise that the beauty and diversity of the Monterey landscape have drawn plenty of film crews over the years! From vintage classics and sci-fi blockbusters to romantic dramas and fun family flicks, over 200 movies and nearly 200 television shows have been shot on location across this idyllic landscape. Keep reading to learn more about the history of movie-making in Monterey County, CA.

Monterey: Making Movie Magic for Over a Century

The first two films to come out of Monterey County were both filmed by the Edison Manufacturing Company back in 1897! The two short films, titled Surf at Monterey and Hotel Del Monte , certainly aren’t anything like the big Hollywood blockbusters we see today but do provide an incredible perspective on the history and beauty of Monterey. The first feature-length picture filmed in Monterey was Cecil B. DeMille’s Rose of the Rancho (1914) and was just one among dozens of silent-era movies that used Monterey as a backdrop.

Point Lobos State Park was an extremely popular filming location in the 1910s and 1920s, but controversy arose after the production of a movie called Evangeline in 1929. The production crew set fire to a cluster of buildings constructed for the movie, but the flames also charred the landscape, burning trees, grass, and brush. The area did not fully recover for 20 years, and the damage left behind caused a stir among locals. They pushed for restrictions to protect the landscape and limit filming, eventually leading Point Lobos to become an official State Park. However, that didn’t discourage filmmakers from returning to the Monterey Peninsula.

The Most Famous Movies Filmed in Monterey

Classic epics The Count of Monte Cristo (1934) and Anna Karenina (1935) were both filmed on location in Monterey. The Academy Award-winning drama From Here to Eternity (1953 ) starring Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr was mostly filmed in Hawaii but used the romantic Monterey coastline to reshoot the iconic beach scene between the film’s two leads. The movie adaptation Steinbeck’s East of Eden (1955) starring James Dean was filmed here. Eden was the only of Dean’s three leading roles to be released during his lifetime, and thus was the only one he was able to watch in its entirety.

Wholesome family movies shot here include Lassie Come Home (1943) and The Parent Trap (1961) . Monterey even got a visit from Kermit and the gang during the production of The Muppet Movie (1979) . The beloved Tom Hanks comedy Turner and Hooch (1989) was set in the fictional town of Cypress Beach but used Moss Landing and Pacific Grove for most scenes, including the Pacific Grove Police Department.

While most movies filmed on this scenic peninsula utilized the majestic outdoor locations, sci-fi blockbuster Star Trek: The Voyage Home (1986) made use of the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium . Dr. Spock (played by the incomparable Leonard Nimoy) swam through the Kelp Forest exhibit, and fans of the series still visit and pay homage to this classic scene.

Monterey On the Small Screen

Monterey County has also attracted its share of TV productions, from the hit Discovery Channel series Mythbusters (2003) to dramas like Mad Men (2007) and Big Little Lies (2017) . The Golden Globe-nominated Netflix series Ratched (2020) featuring actress Sarah Paulson is set in the small coastal town of Lucia, and they also filmed on location around Cannery Row and the Big Sur coast.

Recent Film Projects In Monterey

In early 2021, All the Old Knives starring Chris Pine and Thandie Newton began filming in Monterey County. Based on the novel by Olen Steinhauer, this exciting spy film is set in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Locals were excited to work as extras on this project, and production wrapped in March of this year. While there’s no telling what star-studded projects will be next to shoot in Monterey County, we think it’s safe to assume that location scouts will keep bringing Hollywood magic to this beautiful and beloved California community.

The Colorful History of Monterey’s Cannery Row

Millions of visitors flock to Cannery Row every year. While it’s now known for the incredible restaurants, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and a massive population of adorable sea lions, Cannery Row has a lengthy and fascinating background. If you want to learn more about the place that inspired two Steinbeck novels, a Nick Nolte film, and a Bob Dylan song, keep reading to discover the colorful history of Monterey’s Cannery Row.

Lone Cypress

Monterey Bay was a popular destination for immigrants coming to America between the late 1700s and early 1900s. During the 1850s, many Chinese fishermen and their families settled at Point Ohlones. These immigrants lived and worked in Monterey for decades, and began building the foundation of what would become Monterey’s vital and lucrative sardine industry. They moved from their settlement at China Point after an unfortunate series of fires, and eventually resettled to McAbee beach in 1907. Without their hard work and ingenuity, Cannery Row would never have become the lively and bustling cultural hub that it is today. Many local historians also believe it was the Chinese that actually brought our very plentiful Monterey Cypress tree to this area, the most famous of which is the iconic tree we all recognize.

The Southern Pacific Railroad eventually made its way to Monterey in the 1880s, bringing along tons of tourists and new industrial opportunities. Businessman Hugh Tevis began constructing a sprawling estate on Monterey Peninsula in the late 1800s. The Tevis Estate was completed in 1901, which led to an even bigger boom in visitors coming to see this lavish and beautiful property.

The canning industry (that would of course become the row’s namesake) got its start in 1902, with the founding of the Monterey Fishing & Canning Company and the harbor’s Booth Cannery. A ton of new fisheries and canning companies sprung up in Monterey between 1916 and 1918, which kicked off a financial boom in the area.

One of the most famous events of Cannery Row was the 1924 fire, which started when a bolt of lightning struck two massive petroleum tanks, causing flaming oil to spill into the harbor. Two canneries were destroyed in the fires before the tides quite literally turned, preventing further damage.

The famous American Tin Cannery opened in 1927. The cannery itself has long since closed, but the building is now home to a massive shopping and entertainment center that helps drive the areas bustling tourism industry. During the Great Depression, the sardine industry saw a large uptick in demand, creating and saving countless jobs for hardworking fisherman and factory employees. During WW2, another boom in demand caused the fishing and canning industries to expand even further. But the overabundance of fishing in the area could only last so long.

The sardine population was almost totally depleted by the late 1940s. The once-thriving canning and fishing industries disappeared, and the economy in Monterey took a downturn. But around this same time, John Steinbeck published the first of his two novels on Cannery Row, which eventually began bringing visitors back to the area in droves. During the 50’s and ’60s, the now-empty fisheries and canning plants were finding new life, serving as restaurants, shops, and cafes. This revitalized tourism to the area and Cannery Row began to flourish once again.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium on Cannery Row opened in 1984. Initially funded by David Packard of Hewlett – Packard , the Monterey Bay Aquarium has been operated by his daughter and esteemed marine biologist, Julie Packard . The opening of the aquarium further solidified Cannery Row as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state. People return to this area every year to eat, shop, learn, and explore.

Redwood Canyon Trail

Located very close to our Lodge is Redwood Canyon Trail. This popular, 4-mile loop trail features beautiful wildflowers in the spring, an oak grove, and a small patch of giant redwood trees and ferns. This pet-friendly trail is moderate, scenic, and well worth the trek. As you’re walking through the canyon, keep your eyes alert for Fairy Rings. A fairy ring refers to a group of redwood trees that have grown in a circle, usually around an old tree stump or burned-out, old-growth tree. After a tree is cut down or has fallen down, new trees sprout from the roots of the old redwood. The new trees grow in an almost perfect circle or ring, hence the name. This process helps the redwoods regenerate with a full root system rather than reproducing through fragile seed. This also means that a redwood tree around 100 years old, might be the granddaughter of a nearby tree that is hundreds of years older.

Garland Ranch Regional State Park

This state park is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Carmel Valley, CA. There are dozens of trails to traverse, from easy strolls to strenuous summits. For a casual hike, we suggest the 1.5-mile Lupine Loop, a brief but beautiful walk through sweeping meadows and towering trees. If you’re looking for a longer hike, the Garland Ranch Waterfall Trail is a 2-mile loop featuring stunning cliff views and a gorgeous waterfall. For the hardcore hikers, Pinyon Peak is an 8.7-mile loop with an incredible payoff. After a challenging climb, you’ll reach the peak to find yourself blown away by panoramic views of Carmel Bay.

Julia Pfieffer Burns State Park

You will find plenty of trails to choose from that will lead you through incredible coastal scenery and redwood groves. The most popular of these is the 1.1 Mcway Falls loop, a casual hike with a spectacular view of the waterfall rushing 80 feet down into the ocean. Another easy trek is the Partington Cove Trail, only about a mile round trip. The trail splits off, so you can take the bridge and tunnel leading to the cove area, or a short path down to the rocky shoreline. For a more challenging hike, check out the 5.8-mile Ewoldsen Trail loop, where you’ll walk along the river through beautiful Redwoods and serene coastal views. (Ewoldsen Trail is currently closed for repair, as of 2/16/21)

Jacks Peak County Park

This county park has about a dozen trails to choose from and is a great option for those seeking a quiet, low-traffic area to enjoy the views. The Skyline Trail is a short loop, but at only 0.8 miles it leads to the spectacular Jacks Peak, the highest point on the Monterey Peninsula. The Lower Ridge, Rhus, and Coffeeberry Loop is a 4-mile hike that leads you through serene trees to incredible vistas, with plenty of shade along the way.

Garrapta State Park

Garrapta sits on the edge of the Big Sur coast, and is one of Monterey’s best-kept secrets. Taking the 2 mile Soberanes Point and Whale Peak loop allows you to enjoy everything from colorful wildflowers to a magnificent ocean view at the summit. Visitors have reported spotting seals, whales, and other aquatic creatures from the peak. If you’re visiting in early spring, you won’t want to skip the short trail to Cala Lily Valley. Less than a mile round trip, it’s absolutely breathtaking to see the sprays of snow-white lilies filling a small canyon just up from the shore.

5 Things You Didn’t Know About the Comstock Cottages

Like the Taj Mahal, the Comstock Cottages were one man’s monument to love. Hugh Comstock built these cottages for the love of his wife Mayotta Brown. There are 21 of these fairy tale cottages scattered throughout Carmel-by-the-Sea. With a mere 250-square footprint, they are the original tiny houses. Read on to learn five things you didn’t know about the Comstock cottages.

1. Dollhouse Origins

In 1924, a young man named Hugh Comstock of Illinois visited Carmel, the idyllic seaside retreat for artists and writers. He happened upon a pretty young woman named Mayotta Brown hanging up hundreds of her Ootsy Tootsy dolls on a clothesline. Some articles say the dolls are made out of felt, while others say rags. Within four short months, they fell in love and married. Comstock built these fairy tale cottages to house her numerous and increasingly popular Ootsy Tootsy dolls. That first cottage that he built for her dolls was called Hansel. Gretel followed soon after. The houses were so popular that they received many requests to build and innovate the cottages all over Carmel-by-the-Sea.

3. The Tuck Box

The Tuck House was built in 1927. It is and has always been a cafe and restaurant for light meals and beverages. Visitors rave about their fresh eggs, jams, scones, and other baked goods.

4. Inspired by Book Illustration

Comstock’s cottages were inspired by the illustrations of Arthur Rackham , who was a famous English book illustrator who envisioned the fanciful images for A Midsummer Night’s Dream , The Wind in the Willows , The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm, and many, many others.

5. Cottage of Sweets

The Cottage of Sweets was originally built in 1922 on Delores Street, and then moved to Ocean Avenue a year later. A guy named Ted Kuster designed the beautiful Court of the Golden Bough Theatre, and moved the Cottage on logs the courtyard to serve as a ticket window. In 1959, a Canadian businessman gave the Cottage a new life as a candy shop, which it remains to this day.

6. Beware of Owners

While many of the cottages are businesses like sweet shops, restaurants, and cafes that welcome visitors, there are still a considerable number of cottages that are owned by private residents. So please be considerate when exploring the cottage homes, and make sure you follow the Golden Rule!

7. Signature Chimneys

Comstock’s chimneys were made out of signature Carmel stone , giving them a distinct color and texture. Despite its softness and porousness, the stone, also known as Monterey shale, is more popular than ever because of its unique variegated texture and range of soft cream, tan, and brown colors.

While others were sheltering in place, we made sure the weeding and trimming continued so that the heart of our property was being maintained – even if guests weren’t on site to enjoy the colorful, blooming paths and walkways. The solace found in natural beauty is simply amazing. When so many aspects of our life have been upended, to witness the dependability of nature is restorative.

Outdoor Areas at Carmel Valley Lodge

We’ve also arranged our outdoor areas so there’s plenty of social distancing among guests – it’s important to be comfortable while soaking in the warmth of the California sun. And remember, each room at the Lodge has its own private outdoor sitting area with chairs and a table so you don’t even need to walk far to enjoy the fresh air.

Our pool and spa do remain open, but we’re limiting the number of people who can access it at any one time so it will be enjoyable for everyone. Just ask when you check in and we’ll get things set up for you to accommodate your schedule.

Pebble Beach Golf Links , Pebble Beach: Of course (pun fully intended), the number one course on every “top-ten” and “must-play” list in the world is the spectacular Pebble Beach Golf Links. Ranked number one in Golf Digest’s Best Public Courses 2019 and eleventh in Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Courses in the World , Pebble Beach has hosted six U.S. Opens , more than any other course over the last 50 years. Future championships include a first U.S. Women’s Open in 2023, and a seventh U.S. Open in 2027. Due to its reputation and popularity, tee times at Pebble Beach can be hard to come by and rates are at a premium (average $550). Fortunately, there are several other highly rated courses on the Monterey Peninsula that may be a bit more within reach.

Del Monte Golf Course , Monterey: Originally designed as a nine-hole course in 1897, the 6,365-yard Del Monte course is the oldest continually operating course west of the Mississippi. While not as large or luxurious as its larger cousin, Pebble Beach, Del Monte’s classic charm and small, sloping greens challenge golfers of all skill levels, at less than $120 plus cart fees.

Pacific Grove Golf Links , Pacific Grove: Just up the coast from Pebble Beach is one of Monterey Peninsula’s golden gems: Pacific Grove Golf Links, a real treat for golfers for over 75 years. For around $75, you can tee off starting with a front nine bordered by cypress trees and amazing Monterey Bay vistas, and finish the oceanside back nine with windswept dunes reminiscent of the Scottish countryside. At less than 6,000 yards long, this course cannot host a PGA major tournament, but the locale and history more than make up for that!

Black Horse and Bayonet , Seaside: Originally constructed in 1954 by US Army General, Robert B. McClure, as Bayonet Golf Course on the grounds of Fort Ord , Bayonet’s popularity resulted in Fort Ord opening a second 18-hole championship course in 1964 named Black Horse. Now owned by the city of Seaside , both courses underwent a 2008 redesign by Gene Bates , and these elite-championship courses have hosted the 2012 PGA National Championship and the 2015 Senior PGA National Championship. Both Bayonet and Black Horse have been called “the best 36 holes on Monterey Bay.” Rates vary; for non-members fees range from $165 morning tee times to $50 late afternoon tee times.

Quail Lodge & Golf Club , Carmel: Originally designed in 1964 by Robert Muir Graves , Quail Lodge underwent a 2016 re-design by Todd Eckenrode of Origins Golf Design . The newly enhanced 6,500 yard, par-71 course is renowned for its playability and pristine greens, and is considered ideal for walking golfers of all ages and skill levels. Non-lodge guest rates range from $185 for a morning tee time to $125 for a late afternoon time. Lodge guests pay $110 for morning and $70 for late-afternoon.

The scene of activity almost every hour of the day, the pristine white sands of Carmel Beach beckon all creatures, including our four-legged friends (Carmel Beach is dog-friendly and can run off-leash on the beach!). Free parking is available in the parking lot on Ocean Avenue along with free, on-street parking along Scenic Road. You might also explore surfing, organized beach volleyball, beach campfire gatherings, and a walk or jog along the Scenic Bluff Path.

McAbee Beach

It’s the smallest beach in Monterey County, less than one-quarter acre (under 10,890 sf!) in size, but its size in no way reflects its popularity with surfers, kayakers and families. This is a great place to bask in the sun and dip one’s toes in the water. It also happens to be right in the middle of Cannery Row , home of early 1900’s canneries , and made popular by famed novelist John Steinbeck in his 1945 novel Cannery Row. Is it stupid to buy a rundown circa 1950’s lodge with 31 units in beautiful Carmel Valley just minutes away from the famed Monterey Peninsula, a year around tourist destination, in California? When we asked ourselves that question, we all answered “Not stupid at all, the location is fantastic, what can go wrong?”

Fast forward just 15 months and we’re still sane but, we are completely exhausted, our piggy bank has a slow leak, not unlike the one we had somewhere in our water line, and the local authorities were giddy with glee in finding someone new to torture and hold hostage for the less than stellar, unpermitted, and undisclosed improvements made by previous owners, none of which were health and safety violations should you be wondering.

On our first visit to this gem of a property for sale, the sun was shining, we’d just passed through fog just 8 short miles west in Carmel-by-the-Sea, and there were rainbows, butterflies, and birds & bees, honest! We were like new parents seeing their newborn for the first time. Every flaw, every imperfection, and every landmine, was completely hidden through our rose-colored glasses. We saw only the quaint, charming buildings, how they were layed out on the slightly sloping 3 acres, the beautiful old Carmel Stone and old Adobe walls, and the treasure trove of mature, unusual trees, plants and flowers. Ok, the flowers were mostly dead and the Ivy had taken over, but we could fix all that easily enough. Best of all this lodge is only a 5-minute walk to Carmel Valley Village with fabulous restaurants, art galleries, and 29 wine tasting rooms of some of California’s most prestigious wineries.

We took ownership on a beautiful, 81 degrees, Thursday morning in late June, 2018. On Friday, we had a full-house and our cash register was ringing. We greeted our guests with smiles, showed them to their rooms, and we felt like the luckiest family in the world. Saturday morning came with more sunshine, butterflies and bees and we all looked like we were auditioning for a toothpaste commercial.

At 10am we got a call from a guest who said they had no water. 1 minute later, a neighbor popped his head in to say there was a geyser in front of the Lodge and it was shooting 25 feet into the air. The room phones began ringing and the smiles were wiped right off our faces when we realized we had a water main break. And oh yes, it was on our side of the meter. We, spent the rest of the weekend apologizing and refunding.

We’ve had a few, no, many more just as dramatic mishaps over the past 15 months associated with aged infrastructure, and as we repaired and rebuilt, we came to believe that the Lodge, like a petulant abandoned child, was testing us and our resolve to continue loving it and healing its many old wounds. We’ve met each and every temper tantrum with patience, grace, dignity, lots of bad words, and money. We’ve also made tremendous improvements to those things a guest can actually see and experience as well. It’s the Guest Experience improvements that we’re focusing on now, since we’re pretty certain that the Lodge is finally trusting us and responding to our commitment to its full restoration.

On October 26, we will be inaugurating our Sans Souci Event Center in a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at 12:45pm. It’s our dream the Sans Souci will host the parties, celebrations, reunions, get togethers, and meetings of your dreams. Our new name, Sans Souci, means carefree, without care or concern.
