Today we will be focusing on two of the most renowned landmarks along this coastal getaway: the
17-Mile Drive and Lone Cypress. Let’s dive into what makes them bucket-list worthy.

What is the 17-Mile Drive?

Imagine winding roads alongside crashing waves, with some of the most inspiring views you’ll ever see.  That’s exactly what you’ll experience during your trek on the 17-Mile Drive. A scenic route that cuts through Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove, this road is more than just a drive; it’s a journey. A journey through stunning landscapes and historic landmarks, each twist and turn packed with beauty beyond comparison.

Top Stops Along the Drive

Here are some of the must-see highlights along the way:

  • Spanish Bay: Golfing and bagpipers, intrigued yet? This golfing destination offers a seaside links-style course with a daily bagpiper performance beginning at the first tee.
  • Bird Rock: This hotspot attracts seals, sea lions, and sea birds for your viewing pleasure.
  • Cypress Point Lookout: With amazing views of the coastline and cypress trees, you can’t afford to miss the stunning sunsets near Pebble Beach.
  • Fanshell Overlook: Just south of Fanshell Beach, this viewpoint showcases bizarre rock formations, along with local wildlife.

How to Access 17-Mile Drive

You can get to the 17-Mile Drive in California by entering through one of several gate points. The most convenient entrance would be through Highway 1. During your stay at our property, Carmel Valley Lodge, Highway 1 Gate, Carmel Gate, or San Antonio Gate are all in close proximity. There is an admission fee to enter the drive, which currently stands at $11.25, however, this fee can be reimbursed if you dine at a restaurant at Pebble Beach, so eat up!

We suggest traveling along the drive either early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the rush of the crowds, as well as catch the best lighting for photos!

The Famous Lone Cypress

We’ve saved the best stopping point along the 17-Mile Drive for last. The Lone Cypress is an iconic Monterey cypress tree that has been standing strong for over two and a half centuries. Yes, you heard it right, over 200 years! If trees could talk, imagine the stories that it could tell! So, why is the tree so famous?

For starters, it is one of the most photographed trees in the world, with thousands of tourists and photographers stopping by each year to take a picture with the beloved landmark. The Lone Cypress is also a symbol of resilience, having withstood fierce storms, and even
an arson attempt. It seems that nothing can stop this tree from standing on its own. So, if you’re looking for the perfect Instagram shot, this is the place! It has a dedicated viewpoint along the 17-Mile Drive, and is a must-visit destination.
